Recall Website

It just so happened that when I started buying pureed baby food for Frankie (nope I didnt make my own food - dont judge), I got an email that one of the jars I had bought had been recalled. For one, I was so happy that I had not yet given Frankie that jar of food to try and second, that I was signed up to the Heinz website and got the recall notice, otherwise I would have had no idea. At that point I wondered how you find out what recalls there are. It was recently pointed out to me by a friend that there is a website with all the recalls on it so I thought I would share:

http://babyproducts.about.com/od/recallsandsafety/a/prodrecalls.htm

For those who have the BOB stroller (and I know there are a lot of you), make sure to go through this list as that is one of the products on there.

I hope this helps

Music Classes for Babies and Toddlers

In my opinion, it's never too early to start music classes, I started when Frankie was only a few months old. Yes, I get that they pretty much sleep through the classes at the beginning, but I think it is good for them to hear the music and REALLY it gets you out the house and meeting other moms! I have compiled a list of my favorite musicians and will include those that I have heard are great even though I have not had a chance to join a class:

Kayla: I can not begin to explain how much Frankie loves Kayla. From the moment she walks in, he just can't take his eyes off of her. She is beyond talented with the noises she makes (I will admit I have tried to do them myself at home and they don't remotely sound the same, infact I think Frankie cringes when he hears some of them). Her songs are original and catchy and she is very engaging. I am not sure how she does it, but she somehow knows the names of all the kids in her classes. I am a HUGE Kayla fan and so is Frankie. Note: if you are planning on hiring Kayla for a music class, you must cover all toys with sheets or blankets as she wants the kids complete attention. http://www.kaylamusic.ca/

Music with Marky: I absolutely adore Mark and I love his music (I have his CD in the car which I play on repeat for Frankie). His songs are his own and they are quite the catchy tunes (I find myself singing them on random occassions - no joke). You will find he really loves what he is doing and has won a whole bunch of different awards. He has a program at Holy Blossom (we did the shabbat program) which we loved and with that you get a delish challah at the end of every class and you sing a whole bunch of hebrew songs. As well, you can hire him privately to do a music class at your house (10 people min I believe). http://kindrecords.com/Welcome.html or http://www.songsfordreamers.com/

Joni: This is a great class for the new little one's. It is a developmental class coupled with music where each class Joni focuses on different areas of your child's body. My favorite class is near the end of the "semester" where you get to do foot prints of your baby (I framed mine). I am waiting on her contact information and will post as soon as I get it.

Music with Susan: I think the first time Frankie went to a Susan class, i swear his draw dropped (well his mouth opened - same thing). She was jumping up and down, playing piano and singing all at once!! She brings lots of props; musical instruments, scarves, toys, puppets and more and keeps the kids engaged the entire time. Not only does Frankie enjoy the class, but I definitely do as well. Note: she has a strict "no talking" policy!!! musicwithsusan@rogers.com

Nancy: I really enjoyed Nancy's music, it is mellow and her tunes are VERY catchy.  Her class was the very fist one Frankie did and I still sing the 'Everybody Clap Your Hands' song and 'The Bicycle' song to Frankie http://www.musicwithnancy.org/

Making Music Together: This class is different from all the other music classes as they get the kids up and moving using chants, instruments and song. It is an organization that holds classes in a whole bunch of different areas. http://www.makingmusictogether.com/

Sonshine and Broccoli: I have yet to be in a Sonshine and Broccoli class, but not because I don't want to, but because I have not found a class nearby that they are singing at. However, I have heard nothing but wonderful things about them and apparently the children love them. http://www.sonshineandbroccoli.com/

Rainbow Songs: My sister recommends Rainbow music, she took her kids and told me their music is a lot of fun. I checked it out for myself and Frankie, but unfortunately the location with the best time for us wasnt close enough, but they do have a TON of locations and times to choose from. http://www.rainbowsongs.com/

Brent: Another class I have yet to be in, but have heard great things! I hear Brent is extremly talented, fun and very laid back. He does private music classes and I am pretty sure birthday parties (not confirmed though). 416.937.6837

Gymboree: I loved this program, but a heads up, it is quite pricey! The gym is VERY clean, they are very careful about sanitization (no shoes in the mat area, toys the baby has put in their mouth goes in the dirty bucket etc) and their classes are quite fun. They have music circle at the beginning (each week is something different) and then they will teach you some developmental skills which you can try out around the gym on your own and then back to music circle where they have a parachute (which is so fun), bubbles and Gymbo the clown. Enroll your child in the class that suits their age. http://www.gymboreeclasses.com/b2c/customer/home.jsp?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=G_BrandBrd

If anyone has any feedback on the above musicians or knows of anymore I am missing, feel free to comment.
Enjoy the music

Time to Pack your Bags for the Hospital!

- 2 long sleeve t-shirts (ones that will have easy access for breastfeeding)
- 6 pairs of larger sized cheap underwear (yes 6 might have been excessive but better safe than sorry)

- Breast feeding pillow
- Hair elastics
- Your own pillow (hospital pillows suck)
- Video Camera
- Camera

- A stack of diapers
- 2 baby hats
- Vaseline

Baby Reference Guide

Below is a list of all the people and businesses that were really helpful for me pre-Frankie and post-Frankie. This is my own personal reference guide that I thought I would share:

Child Proofzone: I called the usual places for baby proofing and then a friend recommended a guy who used to work for one of the child proofing places and started his own business. His name is Ra'anan and he came the next day and did a great job. I highly recommend this company for those ready to baby proof. http://www.childproofzone.com/

Sleep Doula: As I mentioned in one of my very first posts, Tracey Ruiz changed my life! She taught Frankie to self-soothe in two days which led him to him sleeping through the night. I can't say enough good things about her www.sleepdoula.com/

Night Nurse: For those looking for recommedations for night nurses, Vena Smith is amazing. She has a way about her that is just very calming for both you and the baby. Plus, I had no clue how to do anything like bathe the baby, sterilize etc and she taught me all. I really couldn't have survived the first few weeks without her. Book her ASAP because she fills up quick 416-788-0395

Wee Care: Are you looking to hire a nanny? This company was recommended to me by dozens of people and they were right! They were wonderful to deal with took the stress away (when I called a million times freaking out about something). Some of their services include: hiring from overseas, hiring locally and helping with papers if you hired elsewhere. If you have any questions, they are the people to ask. I am going to post more about them in a seperate blog post. http://www.weecareplacement.ca/

Lactation Consultant/Pre-Natal: I used Wendy Goodman's services for feeding support as Frankie was eating every two hours throughout the day and night (when he was 2 months) and I was having a very hard time getting longer stretches out of him. I was told to call Wendy and she helped me get him from 2 hours to 6 hours during the night. She previously was a nurse, so I felt very comfortable with whatever she told me to do. Side Note: she also does pre-natal classes. www.4babyandyou.com/

Marcy Cares: Don't be ashamed to ask for help! If your family is away and you need some time to yourself, you can call Marcy Cares and they will send a caregiver to your house to help you. I needed someone in a pinch and they were able to help me no problem. I had a different person each time and they were all wonderful. www.marcycares.com/

Mother Risk: I am sure everyone pregnant woman has this number on auto-dial, but just incase you don't and/or you don't know who they are, they are the peopel you call after your mom and ask them a million questions on foods you can eat, medications you can take etc. 416-813-6780. http://www.motherisk.org/women/index.jsp

Telehealth: Another number you need to have on speed dial ladies ... or gentlemen! I cant even begin to count the amount of times I called them in the middle of the night freaking out about something Frankie did that I didnt know how to deal with (and obviously dr's arent available). For those of us who are first time moms, this line is extremly helpful. One problem, there is usually quite a long wait time for a nurse to call you back, but it's worth the wait. 1-866-797-0000

Orange Dot: If you are trying to figure out whether to do pre-natal or not, I highly recommend it. It's not only for the classes, but a lot of woman say (and I agree), you meet some of your closest/best friends from these classes and those girls are your outlet once you have the baby. They also have a post-natal program with great speakers like wendy goodman, sandy cole, tracey ruiz etc, hardcore work out classes for those who want to lose their baby weight quick, toddler programs and summer camps. Orange dot has a ton more classes that are not listed above, check out their website for more information www.orangedotinc.com/

Taxes for Nannies: Their name says it all. Just when you thought the worst part is done, you get hit with figuring out how to do your nannies taxes. This can be very confusing if you dont have a tax background!! Wee Care recommended this company and Gila (the owner) came over, told me what I needed to do, answered all my questions and said she would take care of it all for the year. STRESS FREE TAXES!!! www.tax4nanny.ca/

RESP: Probably the most important purchase you will ever make! If you haven't started thinking about getting your child an RESP, you might want to start (when your ready of course). We went with a company called the Canadian Scholarship Trust Plan, working with Iris Raif (who was referred to me). She came over, went through everything very thoroughly with both my husband and I and answered any questions we had. I highly recommend her services! iris.raif@cstresp.com 416-855-8866 x 312

Sandy Cole: For those having a baby in the middle of winter, this is a great way to get out of the house. Here is where you talk about any problems you are having and have all your questions answered. The topics of each class, I found very informative and relevant. Sandy was amazing with me as she knew I was having a really tough time with Frankie and she would call me to see if I wanted a break that I could bring Frankie to her house and I could go out for a bit or even after the class she offered to let me lie down for a bit (so sweet right?!). It's also another great way to meet moms who had babies around the same time as you. afterbabycomes.com/about.html

I hope these help

Your Personal Baby Clothes Shopping Guide both Internet and Stores

My favorite topic, SHOPPING!!!!!! Need I say more ;) Here are a few great one's to check out while your little one is sleeping and there are a few places to go when he/she wakes up.

RETRO BABY: Love at first site (hahah get it). All my friends know that I love buying retro shirts for Frankie and this website is just that. From David Bowie to The Flash, Bob Marley, Mighty Mouse, Led Zepplin, they have it all! A friend of mine showed me this website and I went nuts. I wanted to make sure to share with everyone because their stuff is just that cool and not what you find in all the stores. Thanks to our friends at Retro Baby, they are offering all my readers a 20% discount. When you check out, use CODE: eco20retro - enjoy! www.theretrobaby.com/

SNUGGLE BUGZ: I absolutely LOVE this website! I find nothing more annoying then when I go to a store to buy a product and it is sold out. I know it sounds silly, but come on, if you have a new product that you project will do well, STOCK UP!!! This website does! Now, most the time I don't bother to go to the stores (unless I need the item immediately), I just buy it from Snuggle Bugz - they have free shipping, free returns and the product comes relatively quickly. Plus, their customer service is great! Side note: they have sales on car seats and a few of my fav strollers - best part, you dont need to schlep it, have it delivered to your front door. I HIGHLY recommend this website, they have great stuff. http://www.snugglebugz.ca/

ROOMATES: A brilliant concept! How many people told you that you shouldn't hang pictures over the change table or crib just incase it falls, so then what do you do to decorate? Here is the answer: giant wall stickers!! I bought a giant football grow chart (which my husband loved) for Frankie's room and loved it so much, I ordered a giant Curious George sticker for above his change table. The first time he saw it, he couldn't take his eyes off of it. He still to date loves to stand infront of it and play. www.roommatespeelandstick.com/

- 77 KIDS: Sometimes I wish my girlfriend didn't introduce me to this website because I can't stop buying. This line is by American Eagle and yes they ship to Canada (they often have free shipping if you spend over $100 which is quite easy). I bought Frankie the best pair of ripped jeans from here. Buyer beware ;) www.ae.com/77kids/index.jsp

- GAP CANADA (and OLD NAVY): first things first, if you are buying from the Gap or Old Navy, wait for the online sales. If you don't know when they are, I suggest you sign up for them because they have them often. I realized quickly, never buy full priced items from the Gap and Old Navy. They have the longest lineups in store. Solution: order online. Free shipping when you spend $50 or more and you can combine both stores in one order. www.gapcanada.ca/

- ELI'S LIDS: Super cute boarder hats for your little one's! They even have cute girl one's with a big flower on the side (for all of you that love the big flowers). http://www.elislids.com/

- PINK AXLE: Looking for a fall toque? This company has the cutest toques for both boys and girls. We all love the rocker type hats and these guys perfected it. They have skulls, motorcycles, peace signs, chandaliers etc in all different colours to suit all needs. They also carry other items, but I have not tried them out in person. http://www.pinkaxle.com/

- H&M: I can't figure out why they do not have a website you can order from and what's worse is that there are only a few locations that carry H&M baby (which are a trek for me). Rumor has it that H&M in Yorkdale is opening an H&M baby - YAY! Their clothes are beyond reasonable and they always have the latest trends. My absolute favorite short sleeve polos are from here, I bought them in multiple sizes so that when he outgrew one size, I still had another.

- ZARA BABY: Another great one that doesn't have a website to shop on. Their little boys and girls clothes are just too cute. How I didnt realize until a few weeks ago that they had a baby store in Yorkdale is beyond me. I recommend you check it out, their clothes are so trendy.

- MALA (in Toronto): This is a new store that recently opened and already I am hooked. They are like the Holts for babies. They have all the best brands ie. Chaser, Aviator Nation, Joah Love, Appaman and more which are not brands you will find in your everyday store. The best part is that they dont carry a million pieces of each item so not every kid is wearing the same outfit. It isn't cheap, but it's worth it!!!

I truly mean this when I say thank you to my husband for putting up with my awful shopping habit, though he has agreed that his child is dressed better than he is ;)

Happy shopping

Who Doesnt Love a Good Deal

Over the past year, I have signed up to MANY websites for great deals on baby products, products for myself, deals/savings on groceries and I love the websites where you can get free samples on personal or home items and where you can test products and review them. Of course, I still sign up for websites that I just love to shop on, deal or no deal, and I thought I would share:

Testing Products:

- PTPA (Parent Tested Parent Approved): I absolutely love this website! I kept seeing the PTPA stamp on a lot of the products I was buying and immediately googled it. I found out that this is a great resource for those who are thinking about buying a product and are unsure whether it is good or not. You can look the item up on their website and see the reviews by moms. This brings me to the next reason I love this website, you can sign up to be a parent tester! I love stuff like this so I signed up when Frankie was a few months old and I got my first product 2 months ago and loved reviewing it. My quote was even posted on the product! http://www.ptpamedia.com/
- Today's Parent (magazine): A great magazine! If you havent subscribed, I highly recommend. One of my favorite sections in this magazine is the page where mothers review the products (this is where I found my beloved Groblind). You can sign up on their website to be a product tester though I have yet to be chosen :( http://www.todaysparent.com/
- Mom Central Canada: A wonderful resource for moms. They have product testing (however I have yet to be chosen :( ), savings, coupons and a mom community. I recommend subscribing to the website. http://www.momcentralcanada.com/

Mommy Deals

- Sweet Mommy Deals: A personal FAVORITE of mine! When I was pregnant, I couldn't understand why there wasn't a 'deals' website out there for new moms and moms to be in Canada. I heard of one's in the US, but once you tack on the duties, brokerage and shipping, the product becomes regular price and you aren't getting a deal. I went to the Baby Show and was so thrilled when I saw the Sweet Mommy Deals booth. I have already bought a handful of deals from them and I find their customer service wonderful. Like them on FB and when they post deals, you will see it on your feed. http://www.sweetmommydeals.com/
- Mom N' Tot Deals: It's tough to keep up with all the deals out there, I came upon this website on Facebook and 'liked' them and now when there are deals, they show up in my news feeds. They also have great coupons. http://www.momntotdeals.com/
- Cardswap: A great concept for saving! This website has two functions, you can buy gift cards for a discount OR you can sell gift cards that you have received and won't use. I know a lot of my readers love H&M and today there was a gift card for the store. 'Like' cardswap on Facebook so you get the feeds on the newest cards they are offering. http://www.cardswap.ca/
- Hautelook: Your favorite brands for cheaper prices, both baby and adult!!! I can not begin to tell you how much I loooove this site!! It is a US site, but they ship to Canada (yes they charge us duties BUT WORTH IT). The discounts are so good on your favorite brands (J brand, Splendid, Free People, Joe, 24/7 to name a few), that even with the duties tacked on, its still cheaper (most of the time). I have bought Frankie a bunch of things and of course myself. If you really want to save, find a friend who equally loves to shop and place orders together and split the shipping and duties. One problem, you have 15 minutes to make a decision once the item goes into your shopping cart. Items sell out quick!! http://www.hautelook.com/
- Mother of a Deal: Another great website that lets you know what the deals are. It seems they always have the best deals. Make sure to 'like' them on facebook so you get the deals in your daily feed. http://www.motherofadeal.com/
- Baby and You: They run contests, have a mom community and post flyers. 'Like' Baby and You on facebook to get all their posts in your daily feed.

Coupons

- Websaver: Here's a great way to save a few bucks here and there! Websaver has great coupons for all your personal and household needs. I check in every few days to see what they have new and all you have to do is click on the ones you want and they will mail them. 'Like' them on Facebook to get the newest coupons in your daily feed. http://www.websaver.ca/
- P&G Brand Saver: DIAPER COUPONS!! This is a great website to sign up to because they always have Pamper products coupons and who doesnt love diapers on sale! They have tons of gret brands with decent savings. http://www.brandsaver.ca/
- Save.ca: I am new to this coupon website, but they seem to have a few good one's. http://www.save.ca/

Freebies

- P&G Brand Sampler: This is my favorite website for freebies! They have the best brands! Sign up to this website and when they have their sampler pack, you will be sent something by email to choose the samples you want. One thing, they go quickly so you have to act fast. www.pgbrandsampler.ca/
- The Frugal Shopper: This is a new one for me. I just found it and so far I like what I see. She has everything on her site: contests, flyers, coupons, instore sales etc. www.frugalshopper.ca/
- Free Baby Stuff: 'Like' them on facebook and you will get daily updates on coupons, sales etc. http://www.freebabystuff.ca/
- Free Samples Canada:I really like this website as I think they always have great and different freebies. www.freesamples-canada.com/
- Canadian Free Stuff: Similar to the ones above, this website is great because it has deals, contests, freebies, coupons and best of all product reviews under one roof.  http://www.canadianfreestuff.com/
- Women Freebies: I have been introudced to this website today and they had great coupons ie. Fisher price, costumes and more. 'Like' them on facebook to get updates in your daily feeds. womenfreebies.ca/

Informative Websites

- Wholesome Baby Food: If you have any questions about feedings and foods, this is a wonderful information center. wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/
- V.I.B program from Shoppers: I like this website because you get monthly updates about how to treat baby wounds, sicknesses, offerings from Shoppers and they let you know about your Optimum points. www1.shoppersdrugmart.ca/en/vib/home.aspx
- Baby Center: I signed up for this website when I was pregnant getting weekly emails on Frankie was growing and I still get updates as to milestones, games to play with your baby, toys etc. www.babycenter.ca/
- Everything Mom and Baby: This website lets you know about great products that are on the market and events that are coming up. http://www.everythingmomandbaby.com/

I hope you all like the websites. Feedback is always welcome :)

Toys Galore!

A bunch of people have asked me to post about my favorite toys for 1-2 year olds. I am obviously no expert because Frankie isn't 1 yet, however some of these toys Frankie has because my older sister gives me all her toys that her kids have outgrown (again, thank you Jodi) or Frankie has played with them at a friends house and loves! Here are my top 10 (plus the other toys I have mentioned in previous posts):

1. Bubble Bouncer: Do not be fooled by the name, the trampoline DOES NOT blow out bubbles when you jump on it (which is clearly what I thought when I bought it for a friend), but it is a great starter trampoline for little one's that walk or are very stable standing holding onto something. Frankie absolutely loved this bouncer. Where to Buy: Mastermind $50
Note: that is not my kid ;)

2. B. Zany Zoo OR Imaginarium 5 Way Maze: For those of you who need a gift for your best friends child, this is the gift (I say that because it isnt cheap)!! I first saw the Imaginarium 5 Way Maze at my friends house a few weeks back and Frankie just stood playing with this toy the entire time we were there. Not only was I so impressed that he was standing all on his own while playing with this toy, but he was actually moving the beads around the maze. Each side has something for the child to do and can keep them busy for hours (no joke). I recently got the B. Zany Zoo for Frankie (thank you to my siblings for getting this for him for his 1 year birthday), but after googling this, I see that it is currently only being sold at Target. However, a friend told me that the B. line's sister company has a similar one that is being sold at Costco (haven't seen it and therefore I dont know the price) for those who are not going to Target anytime soon, otherwise there is also the Imaginarium one. Where to Buy: Toys R Us $70
Note: B. Zany Zoo (which is sold at Target) is the image on the left and Imaginarium is the image on the right

 3. Giant Keyboard: Really, this is a toy for older children, but I find little one's love music and sounds so when they start walking or even crawling over this giant keyboard and music starts playing, they just have the best time. I have only tried this out myself ... actually... (Frankie was only a few months old when I first saw this), but it totally seems like something Frankie would love now that he is walking (assisted) and loves music. Where to Buy: Mastermind: $60

4. Sesame Street Flip Open Sofa: This is defintely not a new one, but its a good one!!! My mom bought this (Thomas the Train addition) when my now 8 year old nephew was a baby and when we go over, Frankie loves to sit on the softa and play with his nintendog. As soon as I pull out the sofa to become a bed and put him under the sleeping bag, he plays a "night night" game, which, for some reason I find exciting that he has learned that. I think this makes for a great gift! I have insider information that Frankie is getting one for his birthday - I cant wait! Where to Buy: Toys R Us $50
5. Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Musical Table: An all time favorite for all kids and I believe everyone can agree. You can pull off the legs for the little one's that cant stand on their own yet, but for those learning, it helps them learn how to balance.  Where to Buy: Toys R Us $55

6. Kidz Delight - Magic Mirror Laptop: I bought this when Frankie was 5 months old thinking he would love the mirror, but quickly realized there is a reason they put an age range on the toy and put it away. I took it back out a few weeks ago and it was as if I bought him a brand new toy. He loves when the images pop up in the mirror and when they go away he see's himself ... it's magic! Where to Buy: Mastermind $25

7. Clemmy 20 Piece Soft Block Set: A while ago I bought those cute and colourful cardboard stacking blocks thinking I would pile them up and Frankie would love to knock them down. While this is true, he really knocks them down so he can get one in his hand to chew on. The other day when I was putting the blocks away, I noticed that Frankie had chewed off the paper wrapping on a few of the blocks (not exactly baby friendly). I have been on the look out for other stacking blocks that are rubber like and came upon these Clemmy Soft Blocks at a friends house and Frankie loved playing with them. I build them and he knocks them down and still chews them, only now I dont worry!

9. Ukulele/Guitar: Really, all instruments are wonderful, but it seems that all the kids that come over want to play with the ukulele/guitar. I must say Frankie is very possessive over his guitar! There a bunch of different Disney one's to choose from and they are VERY durable ;) Where to Buy: Toys R Us $30

I hope your kids love these toys as much as mine does (feedback is always welcome)
